How do I find a good family law lawyer? A Step by Step Checklist

1. Referrels are the best way to find a good family law lawyer

Be sure to reach out to family and friends to see if they know of a good family law lawyer.  Many times they will either know a good attorney or know someone who knows a good attorney.

2. Google/Online Research

Perform a Google search for "family law lawyer" and you will get many results.  Go through this list and visit the attorney's website. Make sure the attorney is well versed in the type of case that you have.  There are many services attorneys offer, including divorce, child custody, post judgement, paternity, adoptions as well as CPS (Child Protective Custody).  Make a list of the ones that you like.

3. Call the Offices

From the list that you have of the websites that you like, begin to call the attorney.  You will be interviewing the attorney and asking yourself questions like "How difficult is it to actually speak to the attorney during business hours?" or "Does the attorney have a personality that fits my personality?" and of course "How much are the attorney rates?"  These are very important questions to ask prior to hiring an attorney.  Remove the ones that you can't speak to or have a personality that doesn't fit yours or anything that puts you off about the attorney or the office.

4. Setup an Appointment

The next step is to set up an appointment with the attorneys left on  your list.  Many times, attorneys will offer a free consultation, but some do not.  Be sure to ask if there is a fee charged for the initial consultation prior to making the appointment.

5. Visit the Attorney's office

Be sure to be on time for your appointment and make note if the attorney is on time or if they are late.  This is an indicator of how they handle their business and ultimately the cases in court.  During this interview, you will be also interviewing the attorney and their staff to see if it is a good fit.  The attorney should be straightforward and fourthcoming with information and should be asking many questions.

6. Discuss with your loved ones

You want an objective view of your research, so speak with family members and close friends about your situation and the attorneys that you have met with and see what they think.  This objective view will help you stay focused as this can be an emotional time.

7. Hire the Attorney

The next step is to make sure you can handle the attorney's rates and pay the retainer to hire the attorney.  Be sure to honor all financial and document obligations and keep an open line of communication with your attorney.
